BBC NEWS | Americas | Pope attacks US sex abuse record:
Speaking to the US bishops at a national shrine in Washington on Wednesday evening, Pope Benedict asked: “What does it mean to speak of child protection when pornography and violence can be viewed in so many homes through media widely available today?”
“Responding to this situation has not been easy and, as the president of your episcopal conference has indicated, it was sometimes very badly handled,” he said.
He was referring to earlier words by the president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago.Cardinal George said the consequences of the scandal and its poor handling by the clerical hierarchy “makes both the personal faith of some Catholics and the public life of the church herself more problematic”.
Hey, Holy Father. You want to make a difference? Apologize to victims groups for your handling of the same situation. Your fancy hat does not preclude your from hypocrisy.
They really don’t get it. My parents are very staunch supporters of the Church and even they were really appalled by the way it was handled. They have offended the very people who would give them the widest berth.
But hey, John Paul apologized for Gallileo, so everything is cool, right?
Technically, I believe his fancy hat theologically precludes the possibility of hypocrisy. Such are the benefits of being God’s mouthpiece. That said, there’ll be an apology, but it will come in the same manner as Galileo’s: after most everyone has stopped caring.
Technically, I believe his fancy hat theologically precludes the possibility of hypocrisy as far as the Church is concerned, the rest of the world is free to call him on it.
I fixed that for you, Seth.
