How Did I Miss This?

I’m not sure how I missed Google’s Wave but I did. Bit of an epic screw up on my part, especially considering its linked here (and I to be included in Will’s Google Wave Game).

On their sign up page, they asked for comments, specifically requesting haikus. I obliged them.

Google Wave Project
So much to hope for. And Yet
Might be made of Fail

Wave might be awesome. It might be a shiny new toy. It may fail completely. Regardless, I’m looking forward to seeing more of it.

Mental Health Day

Friday, I declared a Mental Health Day. I did exactly what my body told me to do:

1) Turn off my phone
2) Sleep into 9am
3) Ignore my Email, Blog and minimize my tweets.
4) Veg Out

There’s a phrase for this: Necessary slacking. I’m sure there were more productive uses of my time, but the entire point of Friday was to do nothing. Zero. Zilch. NADA.

On occasion, I think everyone needs to take a break from feeling useful and just feel content. So that’s what I did.

Tomorrow, we’re back on schedule.

BSG at the UN

This comment, via A ‘Battlestar Galactica’ panel discussion at the United Nations | The Watcher, makes me wonder if this individual ever saw the show.

Of course the UN would select BG as a show to study: it humanizes terrorism, it presents the army as a bunch of emotionally bankrupt violent people, it mocks Christianity, monotheism and religion, it presents everything through the prism of moral equivalency. I was surprised that Noam Chomsky was not selected to play the captain’s role, and Bernadine Dohrn to play the president. Not to mention the absolutely horrible acting, the cheesy dialogue, and the story-lines which always evolved in the most illogical, however very new-agey way. Every episode of BG is an insult to the viewer’s intelligence, as every decision and statement that comes out of the UN is a similar insult. What next? The UN will invite the cast of Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty for a symposium? The UN is a corrupt and pathetic organization. Why is it any news that a 3rd rate organization chose to study a 3rd rate TV show? The whole thing would be comical if it wasn’t this pathetic.

While every commentor is allowed to have their own opinion, this one screams “I DON’T WATCH THE SHOW BUT I’M AN ANGRY RIGHT WINGER.”

Like a lot of good SCIFI, BSG discusses modern day issues within a different context.  It is not like essay by a pundit, but it is a valid discussion of the world in the 21 century.

Also, Bad acting?  If we want to see bad, pathetic acting, we should jsut look at the republicans kissing Limbaugh’s ring.  That’s pathetic, bad acting.

I Am A Nerd

So on Friday, I published a short story I wrote based on my character (and by extension, a friend’s character) from World Of Warcraft. I put up some self-depreciating tags, making fun of the fact that I wrote something fiction wise. Through these tags, I disparaged more than I intended.

I don’t consider myself to be a writer. I blog and write evaluations (and one day, research papers), but that is the extent of my writing. I’m trying to branch out and write something for fun, based on the stories that my fellow WoWers co-create. To be clear: Given the tools provided by WoW my friends are creating some brilliantly written stories. The whole reason why I keep playing the game are these stories. In trying to dismiss my attempts preemptively, I wound up dismissing my primary hobby and creative outlet.

That’s not what I intended. It’s obvious to me that I can’t continue to be dismissive and write more WoW things. So, I’m done mocking myself (and by extension, the efforts of my friends). Even when the WoW Blog is ready, I’ll continue to cross post WoW stuff here.

Sunday Plug

As Shannon and I pack and clean to stage the condo, I ran across Ouija Interview no 3:  Naomi.  Sarah Becan, whose website  c o m i c s is beautifully designed, is a fellow Beloiter, writer on Metroblogging Chicago and comic artist.  She has a number of her comics up for sale–the Ouija Interviews are fantastic–so I whole heartedly suggest you go and persue her site.
