When Mommacow and I honeymooned on Kiawah Island, SC back in 2001, there were signs everywhere saying “DO NOT FEED THE GATORS” (it’s actually against the law in South Carolina to do so). My comment to that was, in a nutshell, “freaking duh?”
And yes, there were gators in the drainage creek that ran by the rental unit we were staying in. But they were very shy and never left the water.

Even though I haven’t lived in gator country for over 2 years now, I still instinctively scan all ponds and lakes for them.
Not that there are too many of these in the desert.
