A new project

November 28, 2007 · No Comments

I’m going to be proposing to work on a project at the court. To prep myself for it, I did a quick bit of research, and stumbled upon this:

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON CONSTRUCTION:

…further stated that the request before the committee is the approval of the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center rewiring. The current wiring cannot be used because the JEMS system requires category 5 wiring. The County Board previously approved the JEMS project at a cost of over $10 million. The category 5 will allow better connectivity to the desktop. The current system in place throughout Cook County has lower speed. The new generation of systems is more graphical and requires a higher speed and the speed determines the width of the wiring needed. Consequently, the County needs to enhance to category 5 that has a fiber backbone. She further stated that the County will be current for the next 20 years to accommodate not only the JEMS application but the imaging application for the Recorder of Deeds, and the GIS System approved for the Assessor’s Office, the proposed financial system currently being evaluated-all need a higher speed data line. She also pointed out that another good part of this is that the County will be able to put voice and data on the same wire.

I am familiar with JEMS. The newest generation is not graphical, it is simply suck-tastic. I can navigate Windows, a few *nix distros and Mac OS with ease–even the command line interfaces. JEMS confuses me. Requiring me to use a ~ at the beginning of a document because the application doesn’t recognize a space is mind boggling. This application ad its documentation is a joke. I can’t see how JEMS requires CAT 5, as it is still not graphic…

Anyway, the application itself was built using this package. Can someone more familiar with this end of the application give me a run down the quality of this development tool?

Silly me, that is a $100 Bill baked in your red velvet cupcakes….

November 28, 2007 · 17 Comments

I got a quick email from Shannon this morning about being enrolled in a bake-off. While I have not baked much more than mostacolli and irish chocolate cake, this contest is in the bag. Considering that we get to bribe our judges AND one of the judges is easily swayed by Red Velvet Cupcakes (a speciality I glean from my grandmother in a five minute phone call), I cannot see how we can lose.

Also, and to be fair, more importantly, members of my team have some experience with cooking school. Seriously. This is a win.

I do have a few other posts coming up; specifically, about a concert I just went to that, for a few minutes, made me want to go back to church. This is not to go back to church and punch out a priest–but actually go to and participate in Mass.

For When I Want to Vacuum Cats | L’esprit d’escalier:

For When I Want to Vacuum Cats

I need to keep this in mind. Marty, you may want to follow the comic-mojo instructions at the end.

(via Making Light.)

The only thing scarier than the above mentioned trick would be monthly phone calls from the people mentioned in the post, telling me to get THE FUCK DONE.

New Band Name

November 27, 2007 · 6 Comments

I am forming a new band, featuring the talents of a (future) Boston Bookstore Owner.*

Bench Pressed Crazy.

All songs will be written by Jack Murphy.

*unless I steal her and her husband to Chicago. Then, obviously, the store will be in my home town.

Hillary Vs. Barack

November 20, 2007 · 3 Comments

I saw this on the Guardian UK RSS feed. The headline was, “Clinton turns up the heat on Obama,” while the summary was, “Hillary rounds on Democratic rival over the politically-loaded issue of his time in Indonesia.”

It turns out that Hillary was commenting on a statement made by Barack when asked about his foreign policy experience. Barack said, “Probably the strongest experience I have in foreign relations is the fact I spent four years overseas when I was a child in south-east Asia.”

Hillary responds with: “Now voters will judge whether living in a foreign country at the age of 10 prepares one to face the big, complex international challenges the next president will face.”

I’m not sure that there is a critical period for developing foreign policy experience; if there is, I’m not sure it’d be between 10-14. However, those ages are crucial in the development of identity in young men, so on some level I do see where Barack is coming from. Indonesia is an extremely diverse country, and Barack would have to learn about other cultures and how to work with people from said culture. Given that our current President currently only works with two cultures–NeoCons and the Religious Right–even Barack’s experience would be a welcome change.

I wish I had more literary theory under my belt

November 19, 2007 · 2 Comments

It’s not often that I wish I took more “useless” college courses. Seriously, given my line of work, what could I possibly do with Literary Theory?

In my spare time, I would make the most amazing mix CDs ever heard.

I bring this up as I try to figure out as many meanings as possible to this:

The results are in…

November 14, 2007 · 11 Comments

Last week I took the biggest test in my post-college life, the supervisor exam.

Long and short of it: I passed and I am ranked #10 (out of 21) on the list.
